O-rings are the lowest-cost components in any pump assembly — and the highest-consequence when incorrectly specified. An O-ring that fails allows fluid to bypass between pump stages, enter the motor housing, or leak to atmosphere. The failure mechanism is almost never mechanical — it is chemical or thermal incompatibility between the elastomer and the application environment. Getting the material right costs nothing extra; getting it wrong can cost everything.
The Three Primary Pump O-Ring Materials
NBR — Nitrile Butadiene Rubber
NBR is the standard material for general industrial pump applications involving clean water, mineral oils, fuels, and many hydraulic fluids. It has good resistance to petroleum-based products and acceptable resistance to many industrial chemicals. Its temperature range is approximately -40°C to +120°C, though prolonged exposure above 100°C reduces service life significantly. NBR is not suitable for hot water systems above 80–90°C, and swells and softens when exposed to ketones, esters, and halogenated hydrocarbons.
EPDM — Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer
EPDM is the correct material for hot water systems, steam applications, HVAC heating circuits, and many chemical applications. Its temperature range extends to 150°C for continuous service and beyond for short-term exposure. EPDM has excellent resistance to water (including hot water), steam, ozone, and many polar solvents and chemicals. Critically, EPDM is incompatible with petroleum-based fluids and mineral oils — it swells dramatically in hydrocarbon contact. EPDM is the standard specification for Lowara HVAC and hot water pump O-rings.
FKM — Fluorocarbon Rubber (Viton)
FKM offers the broadest chemical resistance of the three materials — suitable for petroleum products, aggressive chemicals, aromatic solvents, and fuels. Its temperature range extends to 200°C for continuous service. FKM is the correct specification for chemical process pumps, fuel transfer, and any application involving aggressive media that would degrade NBR or EPDM. It is more expensive than both alternatives but necessary in applications where compatibility is the primary concern.
Temperature — The Most Commonly Ignored Variable
The most frequent O-ring misspecification in pump maintenance is using NBR in hot water applications. An NBR O-ring installed in a Lowara HVAC heating circuit pump will function correctly at ambient water temperature. As system temperature rises through commissioning, the NBR begins to harden and lose its elastic recovery — the property that maintains sealing force under compression. At 80–90°C, NBR compression set (permanent deformation) accelerates rapidly, and the O-ring loses its sealing capability within weeks or months.
The same scenario plays out in reverse with EPDM in oil or hydrocarbon applications — the elastomer swells and loses its dimensional integrity in contact with petroleum-based fluids, pushing out of its groove and either extruding from the seal interface or becoming so deformed that removal becomes difficult.
Checking Compatibility Before Ordering
O-ring material selection for replacement should be based on three parameters — not just pump model:
- Pumped fluid — water, chemicals, petroleum, process media. This is the primary compatibility driver
- Maximum operating temperature — not the design temperature, but the maximum realistic temperature the O-ring will experience in service
- Cleaning agents — if the pump system is cleaned in place (CIP) or regularly flushed with chemicals, the cleaning fluid must also be compatible with the elastomer

- Cold water, general industrial: NBR
- Hot water, HVAC, steam: EPDM
- Chemical process, petroleum, fuels: FKM (Viton)
- If in doubt between NBR and EPDM for a water application: always use EPDM — it is compatible with clean water across the full temperature range and is the safer choice
Specification Checklist
- Always specify O-ring material based on fluid and temperature — not just pump model
- For Lowara HVAC and hot water pumps, always specify EPDM regardless of whether NBR is available for the same dimensions
- Check compatibility with cleaning agents if CIP or chemical flushing is used
- Order genuine Flygt or Lowara O-ring kits — material specification is part of the genuine part definition
- If replacing O-rings from a generic kit, verify the material grade against the OEM specification before installation
